In a sense the whole plan of redemption rests upon a legal basis. The main characters in this great courtroom drama are God Himself, satan, Adam (as the first representative of mankind), and Jesus Christ (as the second representative).

The drama begins in the Garden of Eden, where God gives entire stewardship of the created world into the hands of his man, Adam. Authority over creation is given to mankind, Adam being their representative. (Genesis 1 & 2; Psalm 8:6).

Adam then delivers to satan, the adversary of God, that which was placed in his care (Genesis 3; Luke 4:6; Romans 6:16). All that was under Adam’s authority, now came under the authority and power of satan (1 John 5:19). Satan literally became the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4).

The plan then unfolds through which God redeems his creation, taking it back legally from the hands of the demonic realm. Jesus Christ, on the cross, takes the penalty of sin for all of Adam’s race. He becomes the ‘last Adam’ (1 Corinthians 15:45). In Him, the reign and authority of Adam, the first man, comes to an end, and with it the stolen authority obtained by satan. Finally,  this infamous cosmic criminal is brought to justice, to be incarcerated forever.

Into the courtroom are brought witnesses who, as this great story unfolds over the centuries, bear testimony to the ability of God to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

An understanding of this legal drama, played out in both the natural and spiritual realms, is a fascinating lens through which we can view the unfolding drama of redemption.
