Throughout history God has made covenant with His chosen people. These covenants can give us a Biblical framework for understanding the administration of God’s dealings with mankind throughout history. We discover in Scripture nine major covenants unveiling the purposes of God in both creation and redemption.
The Covenants are:
i. The Edenic Covenant
Made before the entrance of sin with the original man and woman. It reveals God’s purposes for all mankind. Genesis 1 and 2
ii. The Adamic Covenant
Made after the entrance of sin, with Adam and Eve. It involves God’s judgement of sin and the promise of a Saviour. Genesis 3.
iii. The Noahic Covenant
Made with Noah after the flood. It re-established God’s purposes for the entire human race throughout all generations. Genesis 6-9.
iv. The Abrahamic Covenant
Made with Abraham after the dispersion of Babel. It involves both Abraham’s natural seed, the nation of Israel, and the Messianic seed, Jesus Christ. It also includes in itself the entrance of all nations and families into the Kingdom of God. Genesis 12-22
v. The Mosaic Covenant
Made strictly and only with God’s chosen nation of Israel, after the exodus from Egypt. This covenant acted as a schoolmaster to bring God’s chosen people to Christ, and through Him, to save the world. Galatians 3:24; Exodus 19-40
vi. The Palestinian Covenant
This covenant laid out to God’s nation Israel the conditions for entering into and possessing the land promised to their father, Abraham. Deuteronomy 27-33.
vii. The Davidic Covenant
Made with David after the death of King Saul. It involved both his natural and spiritual seed, pointing ultimately to the Son of David, Jesus Christ, and His everlasting throne and Kingdom. 2 Samuel 7, Psalms 89 and 132
viii. The New Covenant
Made with the houses of Israel, replacing the Old (Mosaic) Covenant with its temporal and external elements, making available to the whole world the possibility of salvation through the cross. Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8; Matthew 26
ix. The Everlasting Covenant
Made in eternity before time began in the counsels of the Godhead, it comprises God entire plan of creation and redemption and is foundational to all other covenants.
When we perceive God’s Sovereign hand at work in the pages of history, it causes our hearts to trust Him ever more closely and fully for His active involvement in our generation.
