These are great questions and ones that you might share with many others. Speaking in tongues has been a matter of debate and sometimes argument among scholars and different denominations for many years. However, the Scriptures are not double minded about the subject. Tongues are a gift of the Holy Spirit available for any follower of Jesus Christ who will believe Him for it.
Peter the apostle said,
“For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.” (Acts 2:39)
The Power of Speaking In Tongues
Tongues, speaking in tongues, praying in the Spirit, Glossolalia – this gift of God is described in many ways, but two things are certain – It is Biblical, and it is for today!
In truth, I don’t think any gift has impacted my life so much as the wonderful gift of speaking in tongues. It has led me to experience and explore more of the spirit realm and the possibilities of intimacy with God than any other blessing.

I have benefitted so much from the exercise of tongues in my life as a believer, a pastor (of four congregations in different areas of the UK over the past 12 years), and in every other area of my life.
Paul the Apostle said that when we speak in tongues we “edify” ourselves (1 Corinthians 14:4). And this ability to ‘build ourselves up’ spiritually is just one of the many benefits of exercising this supernatural gift, given by the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.
Before I became a Christian I always believed that Christianity was dead religion, and that other spiritual paths were more switched on to the reality of the spiritual world around us. How wrong I was!
