How To Study the Bible (and enjoy it!) #1
Posted by: | CommentsSimple yet powerful keys and principles to effectively engage with the Scriptures
KEY No.1 – Purchase a Bible that you enjoy reading
This may seem completely obvious to some but I still think it is important to mention. One of the things to remember when engaging in any endeavour is that we are a complete person. There is not a spiritual part of our life, and then a separate mental part, and then again another part of us that is physical.
Certainly we can break down the make up of a human into the three parts, spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23), but these, although distinct, are not separate.
- Large enough print so it is not difficult to read
- A translation that you are able to understand (*see recommended translations at the end of this post)
- A decent hardwearing cover (leather is best if you can afford it)
- Reasonably thick pages that will allow you to highlight, underline and make notes on the page without showing through on the other side of the paper.
- Something that feels good in your hand, that you will want to pick up and read!
Recommended Translations
As you probably already know, there are many different translations of the Bible. Some are more accurate than others. In a later post I may go into the differences between but here I will simply list what I consider to be some of the best.
Some of the most popular, enduring and accurate translations are the King James Version, the New King James and the New American Standard. Other notable Bible’s worth having in your collection include the Amplified, the NIV and the New Living translation. This list is not comprehensive, and each of these translations have their pros and cons. The important thing to do is find a translation that is both accurate, understandable and enjoyable to read.

The primary revelation of the New Testament is surely that God is our Father. In these short videos we consider briefly what the Bible has to say about this awesome, and life affirming truth.
“That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” (Acts 17:27-28 KJV)
I also prompt the student that Martin Luther’s statement concerning prayer and study should provoke us:
Quote: “He who has prayed well has studied well.”
Our minds can be full of information about our Father, His Son, and their relationship to us, but as long as it remains as mere words or mental knowledge, we will never reap or enjoy the lavish benefits of fellowship that have been opened to us through Christ’s death and resurrection.
I encourage you, let the truths that we consider in this study provoke you to earnest prayer and sincere seeking, that you would go far beyond knowing about Him, to apprehension of His wonderful Person as your privileged experience and place in the family as His beloved child.
Love is the Purpose of all Bible Doctrine and Study
Posted by: | CommentsOne of my favorite verses in the Scriptures was written to Timothy, Paul’s associate and disciple. It reminded him to remember the PURPOSE of all he had learned!
Sometimes it is all too easy to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge alone, or allow pride in what we think we know to elevate our estimation of our self. But here we discover the reason for our passionate pursuit, and the end of all our knowledge – Love from a pure heart and a clear conscience.
Is what we are learning helping us to love more perfectly?
“Whereas the object and purpose of our instruction and charge is love, which springs from a pure heart and a good (clear) conscience and sincere (unfeigned) faith.” 1 Timothy 1:5 AMPLIFIED
