The word ‘prosper’ in this verse of 3 John is “euodoo”. Euodoo comprises two Greek words, ‘hodos’ meaning road, and ‘eu’ meaning ‘good’. Essentially then it means to have a ‘good journey’. It does not specifically mean ‘financial’, yet encompasses the thought that one’s journey through life would be adequately supplied in every way. The same word is used in 1Cor 16:2 referring specifically to finances.
While we walk this road with Jesus, we must be careful not to fall into the ditch either side, and focus our heart and mind on Jesus Himself, all the while expecting good things to come to us as we do so.
Prosperity and Poverty? Keep walking with Jesus and don’t fall into a ditch!
The Futility of prosperity without a purpose – Solomon’s musings on materialism
The book of Ecclesiastes is not an easy book to comprehend. Solomon’s musings swing between lucid insight to downright disillusionment with life in every temporary aspect. And this is the key that unlocks the whole book. When we consider things only ‘under the sun’, and not from a higher, eternal perspective, they do indeed often ring of futility and meaninglessness. From a higher viewpoint however, with an eternal purpose in mind, things make more sense. Anyway, check out what Solomon says concerning materialism…
Prosperity – A comprehensive list of Scriptures concerning the prosperity of the Believer
Our God has provided for our every need in and through Christ Jesus. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says that Jesus became poor that we might be made rich, and then 9:8 tells us that He will make all grace (unmerited and unearned favour and blessing) abound toward us, that we would always have all sufficiency in all things. Why? So we can abound to every good work and charitable donation, helping others. Deuteronomy 8:18 clearly states that God has given His people the power to get wealth, and again states clear motivation for this; to establish His covenant and will of love in the earth. Any way, here are the scriptures…
