The doctrine of Christ’s Substitutionary sacrifice is one of the most profound and far reaching in the whole of Scripture. We are taught that an exchange took place at Calvary.

H R Willmington describes this exchange in his guide to the Bible as follows; “The Son of God became the son of man, that the sons of men might become the sons of God.”

Another respected Bible teacher, Derek Prince (1915-2003) outlines some of the implications of this exchange in his aptly named booklet, “The Divine Exchange”:

“Here is the true meaning and purpose of the Cross. On it a divinely ordained exchange took place. First, Jesus endured in our place all the evil consequences that were due by divine justice to our iniquity. Now, in exchange, God offers us all the good that was due to the sinless obedience of Jesus.

Stated more briefly, the evil due to us came upon Jesus, that, in return, the good due to Jesus might be offered to us. God is able to offer this to us without compromising His own eternal justice, because Jesus has already endured on our behalf all the just punishment due to our iniquities.

All of this proceeds solely out of the unfathomable grace of God, and it is received solely by faith. There is no logical explanation in terms of cause and effect. None of us has ever done anything to deserve such an offer, and none of us can ever do anything to earn it.

Scripture reveals many different aspects of the exchange, and many different areas in which it applies. In each case, however, the same principle holds good: “the evil came upon Jesus that the corresponding good might be offered to us.””

    Consider the following Truths…

    Punished – Forgiven

“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Is 53:6 NKJV)

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” (Rom 5:1 NKJV)

    Wounded – Healed

“Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses) And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.” (Is 53:4 NKJV)

“who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” (1Pet 2:24 NKJV)

    Made Sin – Righteous

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2Cor 5:21 NKJV)

“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Is 53:6 NKJV)

    Death – Life

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 6:23 NKJV)

    Poverty – Abundance

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” (2Cor 8:9 NKJV)

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” (2Cor 9:8 NKJV)

    Shame – Glory

“looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2 NKJV)

    Rejection – Acceptance

“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.” (Matt 27:46,50 NKJV)

“having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” (Eph 1:5-6 NKJV)

    Curse – Blessing

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Gal 3:13-14 NKJV)

“his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not defile the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God.” (Deut 21:23 NKJV)

Several of our readers have expressed an interest in reading more Biblical history articles on the blog. I too have a passion to understand the BIG STORY and fit the pieces together. Too many people have relegated the Biblical accounts, especially in the book of Genesis to mere myth or to symbolic tales with no real grounding in history or science.

I choose to believe that the Biblical account is as it says it is, requiring no extra interpretation. I believe with all my heart that what we find in the early chapters of Genesis are a faithful account of what occurred in the conception and infancy of the universe as we know it, written and inspired by the only Person who was actually there, God Himself.

    The Science of Origins

In reality, the ‘science’ of origins is not a science at all. Scientific practice really requires that one is able to observe and repeat any process or experiment in order to establish a firm understanding of that which is taking place. Obviously, this is impossible in regard to the origin of our universe. No one can go back and observe what took place, and no one can repeat a process they have not observed. Whatever stand we take therefore, is a matter of faith. Believing something we have not seen! (Hebrews 11:1-2).

The Long Ages of the Biblical Patriarchs

One of the most unusual features of pre-flood humanity are the ages of the patriarchs’ lives. And when we say long, we really mean loooooonnnnnnngggggg.

These long ages were the result of the perfect environment afforded by the early world. This was significantly upset by the catastrophic events of the flood, and a sharp decline in longevity results. Also, death was never intended to be a part of man’s existence, and the work of sin and death, with its devastating results, were still in the early stages.

If we choose to believe Moses’ account of these early centuries of the human race (which we do), we discover some fascinating facts.

    ages of patriarchs1

How old was Adam when he died? 930 years old.

This means that Noah’s father, Lamech, could have personally known the original man.

It is also interesting, to me at least, that Abram could have known Shem. Can you imagine talking to this pre-flood father about the world before the deluge, and hear the stories that had been passed from grandfather to father to son from Adam and Eve’s own mouth about a world without sin and its consequences. No wonder Abram desired a city whose Builder and Maker was God (Hebrews 11:10)

    ages of patriarchs2

The Oldest man in history, buy why?

The oldest man in history is also there among the line up, Methuselah. Why was he so old? Because of God’s patience and mercy. Methuselah’s father was a prophet called Enoch (Incidentally Enoch actually prophesied the second coming of Christ, see the little book of Jude toward the end of the Bible to read about Enoch’s prophesy). He also gave his son Methuselah a prophetic name packed with meaning. Methuselah literally means “his death shall bring”. This seems a strange name to call your kid until you realise that the year Methuselah died, the great flood came. God was holding out for men to repent so the flood could be averted, just as today He holds back the second coming of His Son for the very same reason.

“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:8-9

And in a similar way, men scoffed at Noah until the rain began, just as they scoff today at the foolish idea that Jesus will return from Heaven just as the Bible says.

“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” 2 Peter 3:4-7

As In The Days of Noah

Our days are like the days of Noah.

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew 24:37-39

Let us not be caught unawares.

Enoch was right the first time round with the prophesy he packaged in the name of his long-living son. This is a guy who was so close to the Lord, God didn’t even wait until he died to take him home (Genesis 5:24; Hebrews 11:5). With a track record like that it would be well worth taking note of his word about our day, recorded in Jude:

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” Jude 14,15

    THE ETERNAL COVENANT…

    In eternities past,

Before time ticked its primary moment –

When all that lived was the Three-in-One,

Within the counsel of the Godhead

    The yearning heart of love

Cried for something even their all-sufficiency alone could not satisfy.

Among themselves an agreement was made –

    An Everlasting Covenant

to encompass all that would follow –

Irrevocable contracts that would shape the answer to love’s desire –

A companion for the Son of the Father’s love,

    Of equal standing, of like-character

A holy, anointed, blameless and beautiful bride.

GUEST POST by Luke Martin Aged 9

When you are just starting out picture your life as a wall.

The first layer is your trust in Jesus. The second layer is your relationship with the Holy Spirit.

To build more layers pray, read the bible, and spend time with God and other Christians. Here are some scriptures that might help:

    Acts 20:22, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Jude 20:20, Ephesians 2:20, Colossians 2:7, and 1 Peter 2:5.

You can also soak in God’s presence.

If you need advice don’t be afraid to ask. You don’t always have to ask other Christians. You can ask God and he’s always there. Do you remember the parable Jesus told the crowds about two men, one was foolish and one was wise? They both built a house. The foolish built his house on sand, but when rain came and the winds blew the house fell flat because its foundation was weak. The wise built his on the rock and when the rain came and the wind blew the house stood firm because it was on solid ground.

We can learn from this story that we need to build are lives on Christ Jesus for he is the rock!

One of the most amazing proofs of the Bible’s inspiration are the numerous prophecies have been fulfilled, that were recorded by God’s people long before they happened. The book of Daniel for example foretells the future empires of Persia, Greece and Rome (while Daniel was still serving as a minister at the height of Babylon’s power). Even more stunning are the numerous prophecies that speak of Jesus Christ. Known as Messianic prophecies these prophetic pictures of a future Messiah and KIng are so numerous they run into hundreds and hundreds.

Referring to the Old Testament, Jesus said in John 5:39:
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Referring to the Old Testament, Jesus said in John 5:39:

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Explicit details are given throughout the Old Testament pointing to the Messiah. These act like an address, pin-pointing Him from all impostors in the same way our address distinguishes us from all other individuals on the planet.

Consider if you yourself were to fill in your address below:

    Nation: _________________________(excludes all other nations)

County: _________________________(excludes all other counties in that nation)

City/town: _________________________(excludes all other cities in that county)

Road: _________________________(excludes all other roads in that city)

House No: _________________________(excludes all other houses in that road)

Name: _________________________ (excludes all other people in that house)

Clearly, a small amount of information points very precisely to a single individual. In the same way, prophecy reveals God’s address – Jesus Christ! Colossians 2:9 says that, “In Him,” that is, in Jesus, “dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” That is an awesome statement, and numerous signposts point us to Jesus, and Jesus alone. Listed here are over 200 signposts, recorded over a 4000 year period by over 30 different people, and the only Person at the address they point to is Jesus Christ…

    Wow! This stuff really works

Posted by: David Lee Martin | Comments (1)

Should it be any surprise to us that the principles of the Bible actually work? But how often are we still surprised when we see how efficiently the truth can actually bring results when we exercise it?

It is all by Grace through faith

It is so important that we come back again and again to the fundamentals of what it means to walk by faith in the grace of God, and not get all tied up in theological knots trying to be a good Christian. Even Jesus said when someone called HIm ‘good’ teacher, “Hey, quit with the good thing – only One is worthy of that accolade and that is God HImself!

“Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”” Matthew 19:16-17

Now, we all know that Jesus Himself was perfect, and deserving of this attribution, yet He gave us an example here to follow – It’s not about us or our goodness – its all about Him and what He has done for us and is doing in us.

Paul’s Revelation of the reality of our redemption hangs on one phrase: “In Christ”.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2Cor. 5:17

The new creation is a reality we all need to grasp. We are citizens of a Kingdom where old things have passed away – a very appropriate truth to remember at this time of year (New Year’s Day) – and all things have been made new. In Him we have redemption, healing and peace. In Christ we have all our needs supplied and a future filled with hope and joy.

One way to use these declarations is to print them out and speak them out. Let’s face it, sometime we need to remind ourselves of the truth! PLEASE ADD YOUR OWN DECLARATIONS FOR TOO!

    Heaven’s Customs

Posted by: David Lee Martin | Comments (1)

I bowled up to the officers at customs. “You’ll have to surrender your self reliance”, they informed me, “and any hope of earning or deserving any entrance.” Placing my motheaten garment on the scanning machine I walked through to the other side, waiting for its appearance as it rolled along the conveyor. Out it came, but…

The Bible is a big book, but essentially it can be seen as the tale of only two men.

“Two men?” you say, how can that be?
